Population Growth

South Jordan City is still one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Utah. In 1960, the population of was 1,354 and by 1970 the population had more than doubled to 2,942. Between 1970 and 1980 the cities population once again doubled to 7,492 and nearly doubled again by 1990 to 13,106. The current population is estimated to be 37,070. According to the Utah Foundation's Statistical Review of Government in Utah for 2000, South Jordan had the 2nd highest annual average growth rate from 1990 to 1999 in the state with 9.4%. Between 1990 and 2000 we had population of change of 17,217 people. As of 2000, South Jordan was the 15th largest city in the State of Utah. Residential growth will continue for 20 to 25 years until the City reaches its ultimate population of 85,000 to 90,000 residents. This growth will be fueled by the availability of land, a community lifestyle based on open space, large lots, a rural atmosphere, and a general population increase in the Salt Lake Valley. When the land owned by Kennecott (approximately 4,500 acres) begins to be developed with new residential neighborhoods, the City population could rise and additional 25,000 by 2010.

Description of Households

Of the city's nearly 9,300 households, 8,770 are single family residences, and 560 are multi-family. High home values are a reflection of South Jordan City's stability and sense of community. South Jordan City has a median home value of $221,800 according to the 2000 U.S. Census. Also according to the Census, South Jordan city has an average of 3.9 persons per household. Residential Building

South Jordan continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the state. The following table shows the dramatic increase in growth. Recently the City has again seen an increase in permits issued. There has been a 12% increase over 2002 as of this time (11/30/2003)

Age

According to the 2000 census, the median age is 25.3. The following pie chart shows the age distribution for the city according to the 2000 census. The pie chart shows that the City's population is relatively young with over 44% being 19 years or age or younger.

Education

South Jordan's population is highly educated. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 95.8% of the City's population, 25 years old and older, has a high school diploma or some college experience. Of the 95.8%, 30.9% completed a bachelor's degree or higher. According to the Census only 3.7% of the population 25 years and over attended high school, but did not receive a high school diploma.


Personal Income

High-income levels have a stabilizing effect upon economic growth and the high-income levels in South Jordan City are an attractive feature to incoming businesses. The following pie chart shows the distribution of personal income in the City. Income levels in South Jordan City can also be seen as relatively balanced with every level of income represented in the City. While income levels are high, there is still need for jobs and economic growth for the improvement of quality of life of the City's residents.
